Applications

Biogas can be used in a variety of energy production applications.

Thermal Energy

Viessmann Biogas BoilerBIOFerm™ biogas can be used to generate heat through direct processing in a boiler. This is the most efficient use of biogas, as up to 98% of the energy input can transferred into thermal power. Additional heat can be captured from biogas that is utilized in a combined heat and power (CHP) generator. When used in a CHP, biogas produces both electrical power as well as a thermal jacket that can be harnessed for its heating value.

Electric Energy

CHPBIOFerm™ Energy Systems delivers on-demand electricity generation through the direct use of biogas via a combined heat and power generator (CHP). This use typically achieves 40% efficiency in converting biogas to electricity. This carbon neutral energy can be used by the BIOFerm™ plant owner for internal use, or it can be delivered into the public grid. Electrical energy produced from organic waste and biomass is considered renewable, since there is effectively a limitless supply of organic waste and biomass resources, and can qualify to generate renewable energy certificates (RECs).

Fuel/Natural Gas Substitute

Natural Gas SubstituteBIOFerm™ biogas can be processed into pipeline quality, a product that is then referred to as biomethane. Processing removes the carbon dioxide content of the biogas as well as other trace impurities. Biomethane can then be used as a direct substitute in any system that uses natural gas. It could also be injected into a utility’s natural gas pipeline. In certain situations, processed biomethane can replace fossil fuel input for scaled vehicle operations.
