Secretary Chu Shoots for 50% US Renewable Generation by 2050

- December 1st, 2010

According to a whitehouse.gov video chat on Tuesday, US Energy Secretary Steven Chu declared that in addition to wanting to see 20% of national energy generated from renewable sources by 2020, he would like to see over 50% renewable generation by the year 2050.  To reach this lofty goal will take significant efforts and research funding, as well as a competitive and entrepreneurial spirit.  Chu drew comparisons to the development of the automobile industry and how the US played an important role.  He also cited the importance of economics, stating “going into the future, we have to be able to say wind or solar or other renewable are going to be cheaper than gas, cheaper than coal.”  To read the Platts article, please click here.
