Schmack Biogas and Leading German Agricultural Research and Training Center Start Cooperation on Compact Biogas Plants

- August 29th, 2011

Schwandorf, Germany, August 19, 2011.  The compact biogas plant EUCOlino will be tested at the German State of Hessen Agricultural Research and Training Center in Eichhof, Germany.  This joint project with Schmack Biogas will provide valuable insights into biogas systems for small-scale agricultural operations.

Compact biogas plants with a capacity of up to 75 kW have a bright future in Germany.  The recently adopted 2012 revision of the Renewable Energies Law will encourage farmers to invest in small-scale systems. Thanks to the incentives provided by this law, a biogas plant will be economically feasible, especially for small agricultural operations.  Foreseeing this development, Schmack Biogas will cooperate with the Hessen Agricultural Center (Landesbetrieb Landwirtschaft Hessen).  This publicly funded Center is an independent player in agricultural research and training.

The goal of the joint project is to conduct advanced tests on EUCOlino, the compact continuous flow digester developed by Schmack Biogas, to collect additional real-life data and determine new potential for development.

One EUCOlino unit with a capacity of 36 kWel will be installed at the Eichhof location of the Center and will undergo various tests.  Some of the tests will involve adding the Schmack patented, high-performance bacteria “METHANOS“, which require significantly less digester volume for the same output.  The Agricultural Center will operate the system and provide the feedstock.

Dr. Tino Weber, CEO of Schmack Biogas GmbH stated ”The Hessen Agricultural Center is a partner who is renowned for first-class and independent biogas expertise.  We are expecting very valuable results.  These results will be yet another contribution of Schmack Biogas products to providing decentralized energy solutions for the future.”

Klaus Reinhardt, Director of the Eichhof Center added:“The significance of compact biogas plants will continue to grow.  Before this background, we are very fortunate to be able to conduct tests with such a novel product as EUCOlino.  Collecting many real-life experiences is necessary to increase efficiency.  The entire biogas industry will profit from our research through the publication of our results.”
