Rhode Island Passes Feed-In Tariff Law

- September 16th, 2011

Earlier this summer, Republican Governor Lincoln Chafee signed a law which implemented a limited feed-in tariff for the state of Rhode Island.  It’s not the first FIT to be enacted in the states, however it may be the fastest to be implemented.   The program has a target of 40 MW by 2014, and biogas from anaerobic digestion is a qualifying technology along with wind and solar PV.  Biomass is specifically excluded from the law.  Although this FIT has a relatively small target (it would cover about 1% of the state’s current consumption), there may be opportunity to raise the bar if the initial program is successful.  It will be interesting to see how this FIT spurs renewable energy development in Rhode Island.  To read the original piece from Renewable Energy World, please click here.
