Germany Raises Renewable Energy Goals with New Law

- July 26th, 2011

A recent Renewable Energy World article confirmed that Germany’s upper chamber of parliament, the Bundesrat, approved the latest updates to its Renewable Energy Sources Act (Erneuerbare-Energien-Gesetz) earlier this month.  These revisions are significant in light of the Fukishima nuclear disaster and recent debate in Germany about the future of nuclear power.  Accordingly, the new version of the law follows the plan to phase out nuclear energy by 2022.  The 2012 law calls for not less than 35% of renewable energy in the country’s electricity supply by 2020, and not less than 80% by 2050.  Germany will continue to raise the bar and set an example for the rest of the world to follow in renewable energy production.
