FIT programs in Ontario are a success

- October 15th, 2010

Last year, Ontario launched a Feed-in-Tariff (FIT) program, which has really helped to grow the renewable energy opportunities there. According to an article written by Colin Andersen, CEO of the Ontario Power Authority and posted on RenewableEnergyWorld.com, “The program is the most comprehensive in North America and offers guaranteed, long-term prices for renewable energy producers.” It also encompasses many different types of renewable energy, including solar, wind, biomass, biogas, hydro, and landfill gas projects. Also according to the article, “The Ontario Power Authority has offered contracts to 184 larger projects (greater than 500 kW) totalling nearly 2,500 MW of capacity and a further 510 smaller projects across the province with a total generating capacity of 112 MW.” The United States should follow the lead of Ontario in taking steps toward providing greater opportunities for renewable energy projects to thrive.
