Farmers interested in growing energy crops

- November 29th, 2010

A new study from energy crop company Ceres shows that many U.S. growers are interested in pursuing the growth of energy crops on their land. Many of these growers have what’s called “marginal land,” which is land that wouldn’t be suitable for food crops because it has been stripped of most of its nutrients. This type of land would be ideal, however, for the growth of energy crops such as sorghum and switchgrass.

According to the study, 71% of respondents were “very interested or interested” in growing dedicated energy crops and 70% were interested or very interested in growing those crops under a long-term contract with a customer or customers. The respondents didn’t show much interest in owning all or part of the facility in which the energy crops were used, but would like to see the prices for these crops tied to the price of energy, and/or incentives for quality or inflation.
