An article in the May/June 2011 issue of Distributed Energy magazine that explores various CHP applications at business and educational institutions gives an overview of the digester project at University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. An overview of dry fermentation technology is given, as well as a rundown of the 2G “plug and play” modular CHP unit. The University’s carbon neutrality goals are mentioned. Vice Chancellor for Administrative Services Tom Sonnleitner says “we want to be free of fossil fuels as part of our Clinton Climate Commitment to be off the grid by 2025”. The educational benefits of the digester are also emphasized. Dr. Greg Kleinhinz, director of Environmental & Public Health Microbiology adds “we want to use the digester as a cornerstone in the education of sustainable technologies. We’ll also have a laboratory to do biomass testing for anybody that wants to know the potential of their material to generate methane. The laboratory allows us to do a lot of research and development to look at how we can modify and change feedstocks and enhance microbes to get more methane and energy production from the same material.” To read the original article, please follow this link.
